Auron is great if you are beginner to intermediate. The runs are fun and varying, there are some really fun off-piste slopes too. I wouldn't necessarily go back though. I lived in Nice at the time, so it was great because it's only 1 1/2 hours drive from Nice. If you have high expectations of how your winter-holiday should be, don't go to Auron. The one advantage of Auron is, it's not as expensive as Courcheval for example, but then again, it's not as big! So it really depends on what you like. If you're in the south of France anyway, you can head up there for a fun day of boarding. From Nice, there's a ski bus which heads up there almost everyday for about 30 Euros (ticket to and from the resort AND ski pass for the day!!)

I visited Auron last January. We had a wonderful experience. The snow was excellent, and the ski-domain is actually very large, with plenty of variety for different skier skills. The village is pleasant, with several good restaurants. A bit short of night-life however! Aside from one or two small bars. Not the scene for a crazy holiday, but good for families. Princess Stephanie of Monaco goes every year for her birthday! She was there when we visited. If its good enough for Royalty...!!
