We have visited Chamonix, as a mixed group (ages and abilities), for the last 2 years during the Easter holidays. We found it a perfect place for the beginners to learn the ropes last year, and then to practice their techniques this year on the lovely long green runs at Flagere. The intermediates had fun on blues cruisin' all over the resort but especially Le Tour, whilst the more adventurous tackled the reds between Flagere and Brevant, and the experts enjoyed a couple of tours from a local ski guide. The weather was snowy and sunny - just what you want (65cms fell in one day)! Prices are comparable to the rest of the Alps and our chalet (Vert et Blanc) was superb again. Even non-skiers had plenty to do. Queues have to be expected at peak times during the day, but they can be avoided. I have to agree with Matt though that a bit of local knowledge is extremely useful! We will go back.

Chamonix is, without doubt a skiers resort with extensive piste for intermediates and advanced skiiers. We went for five days. We would have needed ten to cover the area available. Plenty of snow for our visit and the lift system was adequate during the week. A word of caution though, the slopes were quiet and more numbers would surely make for a lot of queing. A bus was needed to reach all bar one of the lifts from the resort and ***. on routes, bus stops and times was limited and confusing. Eating on the mountain was extortionate and should be avoided if possible but dining out in the town was good value with many decent restaurants available. The same however could not be said for the beer which was dear everywhere. Nightlife was ok but very blokeish. The best bar I went to was La Cante which was populated like a broiler house but fun nevertheless.

Good resort very over rated though and the food & drink was expensive. The mountain restaurants were either packed and overpriced or horrible and overpriced. For a small plate of lasange that the average person would also get chips with it was about 20 euros which for a family is expensive. I found however of you ski right to the bottom the food is tasty and more reasonable. Night life was excellent for my family. (most teenagers) Boarding was good and even better for the experts, skiing was good but over rated i thought. Snow conditions were good and improved as the week went on. Don't get me wrong this resort was good and we had a memorable trip but there are plenty cheaper resorts that the skiing is just as good. Also for skiers not fond of boarders there are LOADS of boarders, however most are really good not the normal ones who tend to get out of control! we had 1 beginner who took private lessons for 1 day and was skiing with the intermediate/experts by the 2nd day, but lessons were outrageously expensive compared to other resorts.

Chamonix is a mythical site in the Alps. This very diverse pedestrian city has a definite steep mountain atmosphere. The panoramic view of the highest mountaintops in Europe and several famous glaciers is unique. The quality and diversity of the services are as good as any offered by the accompanying mountains proudly epitomized by Mont Blanc. Argentière and the different skiable areas can be reached by bus or car. The skiable area of Le Tour is an alternative to the sports skiing usually offered in the valley. The runs are suited to medium-level skiers and receive record snow levels.
