I went to Chamonix for the skiing and wasn't disappointed. Fabulous pistes - unsurpassed views - breathtaking glaciers. We had fresh snow and blues skies.
Getting between areas needs planning - but I went to Chamonix in the half-term week and although it was busy I had no problems with queues.
Lifts are dated but they still get you up the mountain.
I have been skiing for 30 years and can easily say one of my best weeks skiing.
Not really a beginners resort, but Chamonix has plenty for improvers and the more daring skiier.

The ski areas at Chamonix are not linked and this was a bit of a shock, so do be prepared to spend a little time travelling and, to be fair, it isn't bad at all. The buses run all the time and if you do have a car you can park in a huge car park next to the base lifts in all ski areas. All the ski areas have some great wide runs with breathtaking scenery. I was lucky enough to have nearly a meter of fresh snow, so the off-piste was amazing and the pistes where simple perfect. One day we were limited to only 3 or 4 runs because of the heavy snow fall but were making fresh tracks over and over again; I didn't care one bit.

Basically, I would say if you are a beginner or a timid intermediate there are much better resorts for you to visit. The only "proper" runs are at Le Tour (Domaine La Balme). There you will find nicely pisted slopes with a fair grading system which will enable you to***ess what you can expect from a run accurately. There is also a nice wee beginner area at the bottom. The home run is black icy steep track which is not recommended for anyone but experts. The Grand Montets area is world renowned for its high off piste skiing. Taken as a whole the Chamonix area is hard skiing, inconveniently dispersed, hard to get to and ridiculously expensive, even without the added burden of the exchange rate. To sum up Chamonix, the area is stunningly beautiful, with breathtaking views at every turn. If you are an expert skier/boarder or a powder monkey who doesn’t mind the inconvenience of the dispersed ski areas and the antiquated lift systems you’re going to love it. For beginners, low intermediates, nervous skiers, families, mixed groups and cruisers (and lets face it that’s most of us) there are far better choices to consider.

Skiresort profile

Chamonix is a mythical site in the Alps. This very diverse pedestrian city has a definite steep mountain atmosphere. The panoramic view of the highest mountaintops in Europe and several famous glaciers is unique. The quality and diversity of the services are as good as any offered by the accompanying mountains proudly epitomized by Mont Blanc. Argentière and the different skiable areas can be reached by bus or car. The skiable area of Le Tour is an alternative to the sports skiing usually offered in the valley. The runs are suited to medium-level skiers and receive record snow levels.
