Decided to try Gargellen for Easter and arranged cheap flight to Fredrickshafen. Transfer to Gargellen was a short and simple drive of 1hr 15 mins. Snow was great 40cm of new snow when we arrived on the 12th April. Unfortunately the skiing was poor for piste skiers. Only 1 red run that got very tight down towards the village, about 3 blues up in the main area and 2 main blue runs that lead to the village. These are basically covered roads and as they got cut up and melted during the day they became extremely difficult and narrow. Saw more than one family wish that they hadn't started the journey down and thought the same thing myself on the last day. I think Gargellen's forte is off-piste, which there was absolute tons of. Another bad note: the ski schule saddled me with an 81 year old ski instructor for a private half day lesson. The instructor was a very nice person, okay as a guide, but that was about it. Not really what you expect at the 200 euro paid for 4 hours!

I went to Gargellen in 2006 and decided to go back in 2007. I was originally disappointed last year with the lack of on-piste skiing, but now, i've found the magic of the place. It is all about Gargellen's off -piste and ski touring areas. I spent the week with a group and a guide and we skied some spectacular off piste . Needless to say i'm going back this Easter for a third trip! My point about the ski school - last year i was supposed to be in an advanced mixed English German group. Well i was the English guy the rest of the people were German. This i don't have any problems with at all but the problems started when i wanted the instructor/guide to speak English to me - he simply couldn't. We got through the week with translations from my fellow skiers in the group! Apart from that the place is fantastic.

We have skied Gargellen three winters and hiked two summers. It is a great place with lots of fine intermediate skiing up the main lift from the town. It is a small village at the end of the road. Not much night life, so be prepared to entertain yourselves in the evening. Relaxed area, not hectic. The mountain huttas have the classic Austrian atmosphere. For more variety you can go down the road to the larger Silveretta Nova and Schruns areas.

Skiresort profile

Gargellen is another ski holiday resort in the Montafon ski region in the South West of Austria. Gargellen is the highest of the resorts in the Montafon ski region and has a good snow record and wonderful scenery. Whilst the skiing in Gargellen is compact, it has the benefit of further skiing in the Montafon area and has a reasonable split of piste classifications to suit all levels. On top of that, the ski holiday resort of Gargellen is located at over 1400m meaning that snow is reliable and of good quality.
