The Zillertal valley is an enormous ski range and since I worked there it has had numerous chairlifts installed making the links so much quicker. The two main ski areas from the town are the Penkan and the Ahorn mountains. The Penkan, accessed by a fast gondola system next to the Sport Hotel Strass, is the larger of the two with 49 lifts and over 150km of runs. It can get annoyingly busy though so I found it a lot better to hit the Ahorn mountain in peak season times. It now boasts the biggest Austrian cable car able to take 160 people at a time so you shouldn’t have to wait around too long to get up to the top. I found the Ahorn an ideal place to learn boarding too as it has a fantastic blue run as soon as you get there and less people around to watch you getting angry and frustrated.
There’s so much exploring to be done on the various mountains covered on the ski-pass, and accessed by frequent trains, including the massive Hintertux glacier and, if its fast, long pistes you crave then check out Zell am Ziller. For me though, the powder runs in Hochfugen are good enough to make the Rocky Mountains blush.

Wicked snow during Christmas. I am an intermediate snowboarder and loved it. Off-piste was up to my waist and amazing on most runs, red 27 being out of this world for fresh tracks all day long. The night life at Mayrhofen was excellent. New Scotland Yard is a must as well as Mo's and Aproco. If you are a boarder then just go and remember red 27. If you get a lucky dump, you will never forget the super fast floaty powder; it's what dreams are made of.

The town is lovely; very atmospheric in the lead up to Christmas. There was plenty of snow once you took the Penken or the Ahorn lifts up to the slopes. Snowboarders found plenty to occupy themselves for a week. Ski teaching was excellent and there were several nice gentle blue runs for a beginner to enjoy. There were no queues for the lifts out of the village, on several occasions I had a gondola to myself. We went to a different restaurant most nights; the food was very good and the prices reasonable by Austrian standards. Must recommend the restaurant at the Kramerwirt Hotel - so good we just had to visit three times. We will definitely go back to Mayrhofen - as soon as possible!

Skiresort profile

Mayhrofen boasts an amazing ski area extending over two mountain ranges (the Penken and Ahorn), a legendary nightlife and a daycare centre which takes children age three months or older. Therefore the resort is also very popular among families. These are some of the reasons that Mayrhofen is one of the most well known resorts in Austria. However Mayrhofen has kept the atmosphere of a traditional Tyrolian village. Once you arrive at the base of the slopes, you can make the most of the diverse terrain and modern lifts. As for addicts of enormous areas, the Zillertaler Superskipass covers more than 495 km in a group of resorts linked by buses. Free skibuses connect all the areas with each othher. Most of the lodging, while very beautiful, is too far from the centre and you have to take a bus to get there.
